WindEurope (Wind Europe) is actively lobbying European climate policy with positive support. WindEurope has advocated for policies, including EU ETS reforms, that align with a 1.5C emission reduction strategy with WindEurope’s CEO Giles Dickson urging policy makers in 2016 to raise their ambition in regards to EU climate policy. In 2016 WindEurope lobbied for the EU renewable target to be increased from 27% to 30%, later in 2017 supporting a 35% target and praising the EU Parliament’s decision in November 2017 to support such an increase. WindEurope has further stated support for the UK carbon price floor and argued that there is limited threat from carbon leakage in consultations. WindEurope supports a binding EU 2030 GHG emission target and in 2017 stated support for both increased vehicle emissions standards and a 550g carbon emissions standard for the EU capacity market. WindEurope supports various measures to transition the energy mix, advocating in 2017 for the removal of fossil fuel subsidies, the electrification of transport and increased small-scale renewables policy support. However media reporting has noted increased support for gas from WindEurope since 2015, although CEO Giles Dickson has qualified this support is limited to seeing gas as a transition fuel that will be almost completely phased out by 2050.
