IOGP appears to have engaged on a range of sustainable finance policy streams to advocate for a more lenient approach towards oil & gas in key regulation.

IOGP has stated support for the EU's ambition for climate-neutrality by 2050 in various consultation responses, whilst also appearing to support continued investment in fossil fuels.

IOGP has been particularly engaged on the taxonomy regulation, consistently pushing between 2018 and 2020 for the inclusion of unabated natural gas in a green taxonomy and arguing for a less rigorous approach based on wider socio-economic factors. In October 2020, IOGP was a signatory of an industry letter to a wide range of EU policymakers calling for a more favourable approach to gas infrastructure in the taxonomy and for natural gas to be included. In a consultation response in 2021, IOGP called for a delay and weakening of taxonomy related corporate reporting.

In feedback to the Commission on the Renewed Sustainable Finance Strategy in 2020, IOGP opposed the Commission's possible actions on creating new ESG standards and labels and, in particular, the alignment of these with the taxonomy.

In 2017, IOGP opposed mandatory regulated corporate ESG disclosure, arguing it would put EU industry at a competitive disadvantage. In 2018, IOGP opposed an update to the definition of fiduciary duty better consider ESG issues. In 2019, IOGP argued for a more lenient approach to oil & gas in the EU climate benchmarks regulation.
